Artist Statement

Barru is a multidisciplinary artist working towards their BFA at OCAD University. They are primarily a portrait artist who works in acrylic painting and oil pastel drawing. Barru enjoys exploring how bodies and expressions interact with colours and light. Through Majestic, wild, and sometimes silly imagery, Barru’s artwork exposes undiscovered beauty and hidden truth through new perspectives.
Barru regularly references their own experiences as a queer artist of South Asian decent to provide context to larger themes in understanding intersectionality. Barru’s work includes visual representations of bodies that have been misrepresented or excluded from historical discourse. This exclusion overlooks the existence of marginalized communities as separate entities from the people who oppress them.
